Program Overview

HKUST has been drawing the best doctoral students from around the world through the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. HKUST has recruited the largest number of HKPFS awardees among local institutions, coming from 40 countries and regions including Australia, China, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, etc.

With more than 10% of our Ph.D. students being HKPFS Fellows, by joining us, you will find yourself being part of an exceptionally strong research community.

 

Benefits 

  • Stipend: HK$309,600 (~US$39,700) per year, for 4 years 

  • Excellent Research Award: HK$40,000 (~US$5,000) in the first year of study

  • Conference Travel Allowance: HK$12,900 (~US$1,650) per year, for 4 years; and

  • University Accommodation: Guaranteed in the first 2 years of research postgraduate studies

More funding and scholarships are also available to Ph.D. students at HKUST, including Overseas Research AwardsFulbright Junior Research AwardsResearch Travel Grants, etc, which provide you with supplementary funding to attend conferences and conduct research overseas.

Admission Requirements

To qualify for admissions, applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Admission is selective and meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

1. General Admission Requirements
Applicants seeking admission to a master’s degree or postgraduate diploma program should have:

  • obtained a bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, or an approved equivalent qualification.

 

Applicants seeking admission to a doctoral degree program should have:

  • obtained a bachelor’s degree with a proven record of outstanding performance from a recognized institution; or presented evidence of satisfactory work at the postgraduate level on a full-time basis for at least one year, or on a part-time basis for at least two years.

 

2. English Language Admission Requirements
Applicants have to fulfill English Language requirements with one of the following proficiency attainments:

  • TOEFL-iBT: 80*
  • TOEFL-PBT: 550
  • TOEFL-Revised paper-delivered test: 60 (total scores for Reading, Listening and Writing sections)
  • IELTS (Academic Module): Overall score: 6.5 and All sub-score: 5.5

* refers to the total score in one single attempt

 

Applicants are not required to present TOEFL or IELTS score if

  • their first language is English, or
  • they obtained the bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution where the medium of instruction was English.

 

3. Program-Specific Admission Requirements

Application Procedures and Timeline

The University is now inviting applications for 2020/21 admissions. Please make sure that you complete both RGC and HKUST applications.

1 By 2 Dec 2019 (12noon, GMT+8) – RGC application deadline

2 By 2 Dec 2019 (11:59pm, GMT+8) – HKUST application deadline

  • Submit the HKPFS application online directly to HKUST.
  • Applicants who have chosen two HKUST programs in the initial application are reminded to submit a separate full application for EACH chosen program to HKUST.
  • Please be reminded to quote the HKPFS reference number obtained from RGC.
3 By 8 Dec 2019

  • Nicely inform your referees that it is most helpful if they can provide the reference reports earliest possible.
  • Attend the admission interviews by Skype or in person.
4 Mar 2020

  • Successful candidates will be notified by RGC via email.
  • Candidates who are not selected for the fellowship may be considered for admission to relevant Ph.D. program(s) with Postgraduate Studentship of HK$207,960/year.
